Renowned heart surgeon offers solutions for metabolic health crisis and insights from building the Ovadia Heart Health telemedicine practice.
LowCarbUSA® is excited to announce that Dr. Philip Ovadia, acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon, author of Stay Off My Operating Table, and passionate advocate for metabolic health, will once again be a featured presenter at the Symposium for Metabolic Health to be held in Boca Raton, Florida, from January 23-26, 2025.
Known for his transformative work in emphasizing lifestyle and dietary changes to combat chronic diseases, Dr. Ovadia’s presentation, titled “Stay Off My Operating Table: A Collaborative Approach to Metabolic Healing,” will deliver actionable insights into the metabolic underpinnings of chronic diseases and the power of informed dietary and lifestyle choices in reversing and preventing them.
Dr. Ovadia joins 16 other expert presenters in this highly anticipated metabolic health conference. The Symposium features a dynamic mix of cutting-edge science, practical tools for lasting health improvements, powerful Q&A sessions, unparalleled networking opportunities, legendary low-carb meals, and even a low-carb wine tasting—making it as enjoyable as it is transformative.
“The healthcare system needs a paradigm shift,” says Dr. Ovadia. “We cannot keep managing symptoms while ignoring root causes. My goal is to provide a clear pathway to better metabolic health that practitioners and individuals can follow.”
In his presentation, Dr. Ovadia will draw extensively on his experience building the successful Ovadia Heart Health telemedicine practice over the past five years.
Tackling the Metabolic Health Crisis
The escalating prevalence of metabolic health disorders in the United States poses significant challenges, both economically and socially. Chronic diseases account for approximately 90% of the nation’s $4.1 trillion in annual healthcare costs, with conditions such as diabetes and obesity leading the charge. For example, diabetes alone accounted for $327 billion in total costs in 2017, including $237 billion in direct medical expenses and $90 billion in reduced productivity.
Dr. Ovadia’s presentation will explore these economic and societal costs in depth, shedding light on how these disorders affect individuals, businesses, and society at large.
“Poor metabolic health isn’t just a personal issue—it’s a societal crisis,” says Dr. Ovadia. “By understanding the true costs, we can start taking meaningful steps to reverse these trends.”
A Personal Journey to Metabolic Health
Dr. Ovadia’s passion for metabolic health stems from his own life-changing transformation. At 27, a heartburn episode mistaken for a heart attack prompted him to reevaluate his health. Despite losing 50 pounds through diet and exercise, the weight returned—until 2015, when joining his wife on a gluten-free diet marked a turning point. Then a pivotal encounter with Gary Taubes led Dr. Ovadia to adopt a low-carb lifestyle, helping him sustainably lose 100 pounds, restore his metabolic health, and regain his energy.
“This one decision changed my life,” he says. Now, he challenges unsustainable diet advice like “eat less, move more,” advocating instead for reducing processed foods and prioritizing protein.
“When you eat real food high in protein, you stop being hungry,” he says, a relatively simple change that he’s seen transform countless lives.
Dispelling Myths and Advocating for Team-Based Care
Dr. Ovadia’s presentation will address the myths perpetuating poor metabolic health, such as the promotion of low-fat diets and an over-reliance on medications without lifestyle interventions. These misguided approaches often exacerbate the metabolic health crisis rather than alleviating it.
To counter these issues, Dr. Ovadia advocates for a team-based care model that integrates diverse expertise—from medical doctors to health coaches—to provide comprehensive metabolic care. Studies have shown that this collaborative approach can lead to improved clinical outcomes and greater patient satisfaction, especially in managing chronic conditions like diabetes.
The Ovadia Heart Health telemedicine practice exemplifies this model, bringing together a multidisciplinary team which includes an MD, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitian, Employee Wellness Director, Certified Health Coaches, a Practice Manager, and others to deliver outstanding metabolic care.
