A Comprehensive New Resource from LowCarbUSA®
For a very long time now, we at LowCarbUSA have wanted to publish a resource, supported by the literature that dispelled misconceptions and listed known benefits of the ketogenic diet. That has finally come about with the publication of “The Ketogenic Diet: Addressing Concerns and Considering Benefits,” authored by Sarah Rice, BSc. (Hons), MCOptom (UK), MHP, and Doug Reynolds, BSc (Elec Eng), MHP.
This document is thoroughly backed up with over 300 references and aims to clear up the confusion surrounding the ketogenic diet existing in the media and various online platforms. The document itself is designed to be accessible by the public, yet thorough, avoiding hyperbole and dogma. This makes it an invaluable resource for individuals and clinicians seeking a deeper understanding of the ketogenic diet. Additionally, in the resources section there is a list of books and websites for those who wish to explore the topic further.
Update: This document has been translated into Spanish and is available for free download here.
The ketogenic diet, described in Section 2 of the document, addresses the epidemic of chronic diseases resulting from insulin resistance and inflammation as result of chronic, excessive, carbohydrate consumption. This document presents an evidence-based perspective on the diet’s benefits and efficacies. It emphasizes the importance of personalization and diet quality, countering the generalized, and sometimes misleading, information circulating in the media.
Sarah Rice brings a unique blend of expertise and passion to this work. Originally qualified as an optometrist in the UK, Sarah is now accredited as a Metabolic Health Practitioner (MHP) and certified as a Nutrition Network Medical Practitioner, based in Cape Town. She has contributed to the literature on therapeutic carbohydrate restriction (TCR) (including the textbook, “ Ketogenic: The Science of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction in Human Health” listed in Section 6 of the document) and compiled an extensive TCR References Resource for the Nutrition Network (also listed in Section 6). Her commitment to advancing the science behind ketogenic diets is evident in her monthly research roundups and reference handouts.
Doug Reynolds, the founder and CEO of LowCarbUSA, is a prominent figure in the metabolic health community. He also serves as the president of the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners (The SMHP™). Doug’s engineering background and leadership have been instrumental in promoting the benefits of therapeutic carbohydrate reduction and supporting healthcare practitioners in implementing these diets effectively through in person and online educational events, website content, and podcast interviews of those working in the field or reaping the rewards and benefits of TCR.
In summary, “The Ketogenic Diet: Addressing Concerns and Considering Benefits” is a well-researched and meticulously compiled resource that aims to dispel myths and present factual information about the ketogenic diet. It is our hope that this document will become an invaluable, top tier resource to be used (and shared) widely in helping to clear up any misconceptions and reduce the confusion introduced by those who would discourage the use of this powerful health intervention!
